The Importance of Vitamin D Drops for Babies Many infants require vitamin D supplementation in the form of drops to prevent a deficiency of this essential nutrient. Breast milk and some formulas do not provide enough vitamin D, so the majority of babies need D3 drops to meet the recommended daily intake of 400 IU.

Duration of Vitamin D Supplementation for Breastfed Babies: Due to the insufficient levels of vitamin D in breast milk, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all breastfed infants receive 400 IU of vitamin D per day shortly after birth until they are consuming at least 1 liter of whole milk daily.

Necessity of Vitamin D for Formula-Fed Babies: While most baby formulas are fortified with vitamin D, infants need to consume a minimum of 32 oz. of formula per day to obtain adequate amounts of the nutrient. If a baby consumes less than 32 oz., it is typically necessary to supplement with 400 IU of vitamin D.
